Origins and Partnership with Disney:

The journey of Dole Whip began in 1976 when a partnership was formed between Dole Food Company and The Walt Disney Company. As part of the collaboration, Dole became an official sponsor of The Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland, and began offering pineapple products, such as pineapple spears and juice, at Disney parks.

Creation of Dole Whip:

In the early 1980s, Disney and Dole began experimenting with a new frozen dessert that would be suitable for the hot Florida climate. The goal was to create a non-dairy, easy-to-make, and heat-resistant treat. In 1984, the first iteration of Dole Whip, originally called Dole Pineapple Whip, debuted at Disney World’s Aloha Isle in Adventureland, and in 1986, it made its way to Disneyland’s Tiki Juice Bar.

Initially, the dessert was available in three flavors: pineapple, strawberry, and orange at Disney World, while Disneyland only served pineapple for the first few years. The name was later shortened to “Dole Whip,” and it quickly became a fan favorite.

Popularity and Variations:

Dole Whip's appeal skyrocketed over the years due to its unique, tropical flavor and suitability for various dietary preferences. It became known for being dairy-free, fat-free, gluten-free, and cholesterol-free, and since 2013, it’s also been made with vegan ingredients. The dessert’s reputation as a must-have Disney treat grew to almost "cult-like" status, with guests enjoying it in different forms, including floats, swirls, and seasonal variations. Other flavors like mango, watermelon, lime, and lemon were added, and some locations even served alcoholic versions.

Expanding Beyond Disney Parks:

The Dole Whip experience continued to expand, reaching Aulani - a Disney Resort & Spa in Hawaii in 2011 and the Disney Cruise Line in 2017. Disney fans could now enjoy the dessert in multiple locations, from Disneyland and Walt Disney World to Disney’s Vero Beach Resort and Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort.

Dole Whip Day and Grocery Store Release:

In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Disney released the Dole Whip recipe to the public, giving fans a taste of Disney magic at home. In 2023, Dole Packaged Foods made the treat available in grocery stores in three flavors—classic pineapple, mango, and strawberry—allowing fans to enjoy it at home.

Additionally, 2023 marked the first National Dole Whip Day, celebrated on the third Thursday of July, cementing the dessert's cultural significance.

Dole Pineapple Plantation:

If you’re ever in Hawaii, a visit to the Dole Pineapple Plantation on O'ahu is a must. The plantation features a variety of fun activities, including a train tour, garden strolls, and a maze. And of course, you can enjoy fresh, homemade Dole Whip made from local pineapples.
