Disney's 2009 purchase of Marvel Entertainment has been an unqualified success for the media giant.  They've launched successful film and TV franchises around both core comic characters like Iron Man and Captain America, as well as marginal properties like 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy.

The latest Marvel release--Avengers: Age of Ultron--is well on its way to similar success with a $180+ million opening weekend in the U.S. and over $400 million internationally.  Such returns have demonstrated that the films appeal to both core comic book fans and casual viewers alike.
